Manufacturer Recycling Schemes
Many computer and hardware manufacturers have their own recycling programs and will dispose of your old PC when you purchase a new one, for example Dell was the first company to offer a free computer recycling to customers. They will recycle a Dell branded system at any time for no charge, and recycle any brand of computer for free when purchasing a new PC from them.
They’ll also provide a service whereby customers can donate used working computers to non-profit organisations. They will accept any brand of machine for the service.
You should visit the manufacturer’s website to find out more about these programs:

Why aren’t major appliance vendors held to this same standard? I recently bought a water softeners from a major US appliance retailer. After picking up and installing the unit myself, the store staff was clueless on how I could recycle the old unit. How many old appliances are getting landfilled, due to lack of programs for appliance recycling?
